Heat feels so good, but is ice better than heat?

Here Junior Dos Santos, a top UFC fighter, dips into an ice bath to help him recover from a hard training session.  Most, if not all top athletes, utilize this technique.  Most people are amazed and shocked, but to me, it clearly shows how effective a tool it is.  What does ice do?  It controls the inflammation that is produced after hard training sessions and workouts, reduces the influx of chemicals that cause cell damage in the muscles, and reduced pain extremely effectively.  How can this help you?  Well, the botttom line is that heat is a very good therapeutic tool, but must be used judiciously.  You can do damage and INCREASE time to recover when using heat - ie do some damage.  When in doubt, use ice.  Apart from being careful with your skin so as not to 'burn', you generally are unlikely to do any harm, no matter the injury - so use ice!  This, combined with regular chiropractic care from your local chiropractor in North Vancouver, and ART(c), will help you feel great and succeed in daily life and in your favourite sport!

Do Chiropractors Treat Shoulders?
Written by philippe

Chiropractors are highly trained in all areas of the musculoskeletal system. Although well known for treating back pain, chiropractors have at their disposal many techniques to treat shoulder pain and injury. Unless deemed a surgical candidate, the success rate is very high for problems like rotator cuff strain, rotator cuff tendinitis/osis, frozen shoulder, joint injury (as in sprains), labral tears, among many other ailments. Treatment methods may include ART ©, manipulation, mobilization, stretching, electrical modalities, laser, ice among many more. Also, it is common to have shoulder pain referring from other areas such as the neck, spine and ribs underneath the shoulder – and a chiropractor is well qualified to examine and properly diagnose an ailment that may be difficult to understand or identify.

Article in Medical Journal Spine Shows Benefits of Regular Chiropractic Care!

Recently, a study performed by MD's performing manual manipulation (adjustments) to sufferers of chronic low back pain, showed excellent prognosis with long term, regular care.  This study, which has been printed ahead of being published in a soon to be released volume of the esteemed medical journal Spine, is great news not only for chiropractic in general, but to many sufferers of chronic low back pain everywhere.

The purpose of the sudy was to investigate the effectiveness of spinal manipulative therapy in management of chronic non-specific low back pain, and to determine the effectiveness in reducing pain and disability over an extended period of time following an initial phase of treatment.

This study also showed that chronic low back pain patients who received twice monthly care over a 10 month period had significantly reduced pain levels, and significantly increased function, mobility, and general perception of their health - especially when compared to patients that did not continue regular care, or stopped care after an initial phase.

I often encouneter people that have reservations about undergoing chiropractic care.  It is my hope that through this medium, I will continue to bring forward studies and show actual evidence that chiropractic is not only safe and effective, but a regular necessity for people seeking long term good health and who want to achieve the most out of their lives.

The specifics of the study are as follows:

February 2011 Study Title: Does maintained spinal manipulation therapy for chronic non-specific low back pain result in better long term outcome? Authors: Senna M & Machaly S Author's Affiliations: Rheumatology and Rehabilitation department, Faculty of Medicine, Mansoura University, Mansoura, Egypt. Publication Information: Spine - Published Ahead of Print. Acceptance, 17 January 2011

MMA "Battle at the Pier" coming soon!

Battle at the Pier - IFC #9  - takes place Saturday October 2nd at 8 pm.  This is our second visit to the fine Pier Hotel in North Van, at the foot of Lonsdale Ave.  You will be treated to a fine night of buffet dining, and an exciting night of MMA and Kickboxing.  As one of the 2 "fight docs" that will be attending ringside, I can attest that these hard working amateurs train hard every day to showcase their skills on a local level.  Many of them go on to fight in bigger events world wide.

ifc9 oct 2 2010

If you have never seen the competion and sport of MMA or Kickboxing, I invite you to check it out.  A tremendous amount of skill is involved in many different facets of the "fight game".  From boxing skills, to take-downs and throws, to wrestling and ground fighting like Brazilian jiu-jitsu, there are many ways a fighter can win, and lose!

Check back after the event for a recap and news from the events!

All the best,

Battlefield Fight League Event
Written by philippe
Monday, 17 May 2010 21:54

I was lucky and had the pleasure of being one of 2 ring Doctors at the most recent Battlefield Fight League event on May 15th, at the Rocky Mountaineer Station in Vancouver!  I must say it was very well run, and had to be one of the best produced shows I've been to.  As a Sports Chiropractor, I am often called upon to participate at "on field events."  In this case, the goal was to NOT be busy, as usually otherwise this means someone has been seriously hurt.  The night started off as a "slow" night, as my colleague Dr. Rondeau stated,  but just as he said that, one of the fighter's suffered an eye gouge by an errant toe!  Unfortunately we had to send him to the hospital as he had some blood leaking into his outer chamber of his eye.  Luckily, he will likely fully recover.  The rest of the night was marked by several rear-naked chokes, followed by a great finale main event between Tak Sasaki fighting out of Wolf's Den in North Van and Chris Day from Kelowna.  Eventually, Tak Sasaki decisioned Chris Day in and exciting fight, showcasing excellent skills while standing and on the ground.

A special word of encouragement to philippemacinnes.com - sponsored athlete Marcus Hicks and his Total Package Sports Management Team's fine effort on the night.  Several of his athletes showed much heart, taking fights on short notice, yet still doing well.  Congratulations to Nick Marinos and Sarah McLeod on their exciting victories on the night!

Stay tuned for regular updates on philippemacinnes.com
